Kathmandu. With the aim of expanding foreign employment opportunities based on the principle of safe, dignified and cost-bearing for Nepalese workers, the process of recruiting workers through the government-government system has progressed between Nepal and Mauritius. Moving ahead with Nepal’s proposal, Mauritius has informed that it agrees to the process of the JTUG system.

On October 29, 2026, the High Commission of Mauritius in New Delhi sent a formal correspondence to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal and provided a revised draft of the memorandum of understanding.

Through the proposed agreement, it is aimed to expand employment opportunities with attractive wages and service facilities for Nepali workers in the fields of production, construction, agriculture, tourism and information technology.

The draft includes government-level recruitment mechanisms, selection of skilled and trained workers, recruitment procedures in accordance with the laws of both countries, employer’s responsibilities, workers’ rights and welfare, and provisions related to repatriation after termination of employment or termination of contract.

Earlier on June 9, 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland, in a bilateral meeting between the Minister of Youth, Labor and Employment of Nepal, Ramji Yadav and the Minister of Labor and Industrial Relations of Mauritius, Mohammad Reza Kassam Utem, Minister Yadav proposed to expand labor cooperation through the GTU system.

During the meeting, Labor Minister of Mauritius Utem informed that there is a provision that employers will bear the cost of labor recruitment and said that he is willing to create more employment opportunities for Nepali workers and organize an international job fair in Nepal.

The government of Nepal is committed to advance the labor cooperation with Mauritius by completing the necessary internal process to finalize the proposed revised Memorandum of Understanding. This has made it clear that the government’s priority to expand attractive, safe and dignified employment opportunities for Nepali workers is strong.

The progress on this MoU indicates that the initial results of the labor diplomacy initiative intensively promoted by the Ministry of Youth, Labor and Employment are beginning to be seen. In order to ensure safe, orderly and dignified foreign employment opportunities for Nepali workers, efforts are being made to strengthen and make labor diplomacy more effective with existing and new destination countries.
