Kathmandu. US Vice President J.D. Vance has sent a diplomatic letter to Iran’s National Security Chief Mohsen Rezaei as the risk of a possible military confrontation between the US and Iran is increasing.

In a letter, Vice President Vance stated that any talks aimed at preventing a possible US military attack on Iran must include a “discussion on the nuclear issue”.

The high-level diplomatic contact between the two countries comes months after President Donald Trump is considering resuming major military action against Iran after the midterm elections.

According to US officials, Vice President Vance himself suggested that President Trump send a letter to Iran’s national security chief Rezai. Rezaei is considered to be Iran’s top security strategist and a powerful figure in direct contact with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

While refusing to disclose the time of sending the letter, an American official said, “President Trump was very excited about the subject of this letter.” The subject of Vance’s letter to the Iranian official was first published by “The Wall Street Journal”.

A major stumbling block in efforts to restart talks

Both sides’ own strict conditions have become an obstacle in the attempt to restart diplomatic talks between the two countries. Iran has set the preconditions for talks with the US that the US lift the naval blockade, release frozen Iranian funds and allow oil sales.

The US has maintained that Iran must return to the nuclear talks unconditionally before any sanctions relief is granted to Iran.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, President Trump asserted that the main purpose of Vice President Vance’s letter was to provide needed medical supplies to Iran. President Trump said, “Basically, this letter is related to the delivery of essential medical supplies to help the Iranian people who are sick and suffering from health problems.”
