Kathmandu. In the World Hunger Index (GHI) 2026, Nepal is ranked 72 out of 122 countries. According to the public report on Saturday, although the hunger situation in Nepal is in the middle category, there has been a general improvement compared to the previous year.
According to the report, Nepal has scored 14.5 points out of 100 this year. In 2025, Nepal’s score was 14.8. Previously, Nepal had a score of 14.7 points in 2024, but it has improved this time even though it suffered some decline in the last year. A low score on the hunger index indicates a relatively good situation.
Statistics show that the hunger situation in Nepal has improved significantly in the last two decades. In the year 2000, Nepal’s GHI score was 37.1. At that time, Nepal was in the category of severe starvation. The index of Nepal which was 18.4 points in 2018 is gradually decreasing.
When compared with South Asian countries, Nepal’s situation is better than the regional average. In the index, Sri Lanka ranks 53rd with 10.2 points, Nepal ranks 72nd with 14.5 points, Bangladesh ranks 84th with 19.2 points, India ranks 100th with 24.1 points and Pakistan ranks 106th with 25.5 points.
