Kathmandu. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a political setback after the Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate won in the Legislative Council constituency of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Lal Bihari Yadav, the SP’s current legislative council member, won in the teachers constituency in the legislative council area called teachers and graduates. He said BJP’s Dr. He defeated Pramod Kumar Mishra by a wide margin and won for the second time in a row. Ashutosh Sinha of SP has also defeated Kedarnath Singh of BJP in the graduation constituency.
Overall, out of 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh’s teacher and graduate constituencies, BJP has won 6 seats and SP has won 5 seats. Even though the BJP won more seats overall, the loss of both seats in Modi’s constituency is considered politically meaningful.
Ignoring local discontent, giving re-tickets to candidates rejected in previous elections and inactivity of workers are said to be the reasons behind the BJP’s defeat. He said that even though there is dissatisfaction among teachers and graduate voters regarding issues such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Shikshamitra’s problems, the party has not addressed them.
It has been analyzed that the results of Varanasi also remind the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, BJP won 33, SP 37 and Congress 6. Modi’s margin of victory in Varanasi also decreased from around 479,000 in 2019 to around 153,000 in 2024.
