Kathmandu. A section of the main road has been swept away by the flood caused by the sudden release of large amounts of water from the Shintafu Himalaya in Bhutan. The remote Laya region has been cut off from road connectivity with the rest of Bhutan after the road was blocked.
The flood water from Shintafu Lake, located in Gasa District of Northern Bhutan, reached Taktsema Khang at around 8:15 pm. After the flood damaged a section of Laya Jokhang Road, the road has been closed for all traffic until further notice.
The Bhutanese authorities have asked the security personnel and other people deployed in the dangerous area to go to a safe place. Precautionary measures have been taken keeping in mind the possible risk. Neighboring areas have also been alerted. So far, there has been no report of human casualties in the incident.
Due to the darkness of the night, the amount of water released from the lake and the damage caused by the flood could not be fully assessed. Preliminary reports have shown that the impact of the flood may be large.
Vigilance has also been increased in West Bengal after this incident. Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oran has asked the residents of Sankosh River to be careful, keeping in mind the risk of possible flooding in the lower coastal areas.
It is mentioned in the news that he has instructed the administration and related officials to contact the residents of the risky areas and make arrangements to move them to safe places if necessary.
