Kathmandu. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAN) has asked to take air safety precautions to reduce the possible impact of the powerful cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’, which is expected to enter the coastal areas around Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam in India.
The authority has issued a security circular on October 28, 2026 (October 11, 2083) and directed the air service providers, airport operators, air service operators and related stakeholders to take necessary precautions.
According to the circular, due to this weather system, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rains, gales with lightning, strong winds and snowfall in the Himalayan and high mountain areas. According to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Water and Meteorology Department, its effect may be particularly felt in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces and some parts of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces may also be affected.
From Thursday (November 12) to Saturday (November 14) heavy rains, strong winds and low visibility are likely to cause problems with air flights and landings, airport operations and runway surfaces, the authority has asked to exercise caution.
The authority has instructed the air traffic management agency to make a proper plan for flight management in adverse weather, to coordinate with other air service units as needed and to change the flight route, hold and other necessary management if the conditions are worse than the set operating limits due to weather.
Similarly, due to heavy rain or adverse weather, the flight of the aircraft may be affected, so the radar controller has been asked to maintain the required distance. It is also mentioned in the circular that information regarding sudden changes in wind speed and direction (wind shear), severe atmospheric instability and thunderstorms should be provided immediately to the aircraft taking off and landing.
The authority has instructed to carry out regular inspection keeping in mind the risk of water freezing on the runway due to rain, surface slipping and affecting the braking ability of the aircraft.
It has been asked to maintain constant coordination between the airport operations, civil engineering and airside departments, to remove items and garbage brought by strong winds and to ensure that the lights and other essential systems of the airport are in regular operation. The circular also mentions that if there is a problem in the operation of any equipment or system, the necessary information should be issued immediately.
The authority has requested the airline operators and flight crews to make a detailed assessment of the weather before the flight, take into account possible delays, holding and landing at alternative airports and follow the prescribed safety procedures including adequate fuel management.
Similarly, all the relevant bodies have been instructed to keep the essential infrastructure of air route service and air traffic management, alternative power supply and communication system in readiness and to inform immediately about any serious risk, obstruction or security incident through prescribed means.Kathmandu.
