New York. US President Donald Trump has changed the scope of the 50 percent additional customs duties imposed on certain goods imported from Canada. According to the declaration signed on Friday, some items have been removed from the tariff list and some new items have been added.
The new arrangement will come into effect from October 30.
According to the announcement published on the White House website, plywood sheets, some paper products, certain types of machinery and refrigeration equipment and some crates and boxes used for packing will no longer be subject to an additional 50 percent customs duty.
On the contrary, certain types of valves, carpets, waste products and other certain materials imported from Canada will be subject to an additional 50 percent customs duty.
According to the announcement, the revised provisions will apply to goods imported for consumption in the US or taken out of storage for consumption on or after October 30.
The manifesto states that the changes in the scope of customs duties will balance the burden or disadvantage on the American commercial sector. In addition, it is claimed that this step is in the interest of the US and the public interest.
The Trump administration has argued that the additional tariffs are in response to Canada’s alleged discriminatory and unfair treatment of exports of American vehicles and their parts.
Earlier, on August 22, Trump imposed an additional 50 percent customs duty on goods worth about 20 billion US dollars imported from Canada.
In response to the US action, Canada also imposed customs duties on US goods of the same value. Canada’s retaliatory measures came into effect on September 8. The customs dispute between the two countries has further strained economic relations between North America’s two major trading partners. – Xinhua
